Octopus Energy tariffs explained

Standard tariffs
Most people join on one of these.
Flexible Octopus
A variable tariff whose prices move with the energy price cap. No exit fees, so you can leave or switch tariff whenever you like.
Octopus Fixed
Your unit rates and standing charges are fixed for the length of the deal. Check the tariff details for any exit fees before you commit.
Market-linked tariffs
Prices follow the wholesale market, so they can be very cheap or expensive. You need a smart meter.
Agile Octopus
Electricity prices change through the day based on wholesale costs and can even go below zero. Rewards moving washing, charging and heating to cheap times.
Octopus Tracker
Prices change once a day in line with the market, for both electricity and gas. Simpler to live with than Agile.
Electric car tariffs
Cheap overnight electricity for charging, and for the rest of your home at the same time.
Intelligent Octopus Go
Octopus controls your charging to use the cheapest, greenest times within a cheap overnight window. Needs a compatible car or charger.
Octopus Go
A set number of cheap hours every night for your car and home, without needing a compatible charger.
Intelligent Drive Pack
A paid add-on to a home tariff that adds unlimited smart charging for your car.
Octopus Power Pack
A beta tariff that lets a vehicle-to-grid ready car send power back to the grid.
Heating tariffs
For electric heating that can be shifted to cheaper times.
Cosy Octopus
Several cheaper periods every day, so your heat pump does more of its work when electricity costs less.
Snug Octopus
Charges storage heaters at cheaper, greener times, with a daytime boost.
Solar, battery and export tariffs
For homes that generate or store their own electricity.
Octopus Flux
Import and export rates designed to make the most of solar panels and home batteries.
Intelligent Octopus Flux
Octopus runs your battery to get the most from Flux rates. For Octopus solar and battery customers.
Outgoing Octopus
Get paid for the electricity you export, with a flat rate, Agile market rates or a higher peak-time option.
Smart Export Guarantee
A basic export payment for households exporting to the grid while on a smart import tariff.
Joining Octopus with a referral link
Through a referral link you'll normally join on a standard tariff such as Flexible or Fixed. Once you're on supply, and your smart meter is working if the tariff needs one, you can move onto a smart tariff from your online account. The referral credit is paid either way.
Questions
Which Octopus tariff should I choose?
If you don't have an EV, heat pump or solar, start with Flexible Octopus for freedom to leave, or Octopus Fixed for price certainty. If you can shift your electricity use and have a smart meter, Agile or Tracker can be cheaper. EV owners usually save most on Intelligent Octopus Go or Octopus Go.
Does Flexible Octopus have exit fees?
No. Flexible Octopus has no exit fees, so you can leave or change tariff at any time.
Can I use a referral link with any Octopus tariff?
You'll normally join on a standard tariff such as Flexible or Fixed through the referral link, then move onto a smart tariff from your online account once you're eligible, for example once your smart meter is working.
Do I need a smart meter for Octopus?
Not for Flexible or Fixed. Agile, Tracker and the time-of-use tariffs for EVs, heat pumps and storage heaters need a smart meter so Octopus can price your usage by time of day.
