Octopus referral credit missing? How to check and fix it
Octopus's £50 referral credit isn't instant, and a few things can stop it being paid. Work through these checks in order.
1. Has it been about four weeks?
Octopus pays referral credit automatically, but only after two things have happened: your supply has started with Octopus, and your first monthly Direct Debit has been taken. Together that usually takes around four weeks from signing up. It can take longer if your old supplier is slow to release you.
2. Check the right place
- AIn the app: open the Bills tab and look for REFERRAL REWARD +£50.00.
- WOn the website: go to Payments, scroll to the bottom and choose View My Balance History.
The credit sits on your account balance and comes off future bills, so it won't appear as a bank payment.
3. Common reasons it isn't paid
- You switched through a comparison or cashback site. Octopus pays those sites instead, so it doesn't pay referral credit on top. This can't be fixed afterwards.
- You've been with Octopus recently. Referrals are for new customers, so anyone with Octopus, including Bulb and its other brands, in the last 12 months isn't eligible.
- Your first Direct Debit hasn't gone through. Check it was set up and hasn't failed.
- You moved house. If you've already had a referral credit as an Octopus customer, you won't get another one for a new home.
- You opened the link after starting your quote. Open the referral link first, in the same browser, then get your quote.
4. Forgot to use the link? You can usually fix it
Octopus says that if you joined directly on its website but forgot the referral link, you can get in touch, give them the referral code, and they'll add the referral to both accounts. You'll need the code from whoever referred you.
If you were going to use mine, the code is:
sunny-lane-689Once it's added, you can still claim the extra £25 from me.
5. Prepayment meters
On a traditional prepayment meter, ask Octopus for the credit once your account is set up. They can refund it to top up your meter if you give them Direct Debit details, or send it on a key or card. On a smart prepayment meter, ask them to add it to the meter.
6. Still missing? Contact Octopus
If it's been well over four weeks since your supply started and none of the above applies, contact Octopus through the app or your online account and ask them to check the referral. Have the referral code to hand.

In the Octopus app, open the Bills tab and look for a line called REFERRAL REWARD. On the website, go to Payments, scroll down and choose View My Balance History.
